Today is the first day that it actually feels like fall in my city. It’s crisp, cloudy, and blustery outside, and inside, I’m thinking about all things fall wardrobe. This year I’m striving to go back to basics with my fall capsule, and I want to take you along with me. I’m paring things down, making sure everything works together cohesively, and being mindful about new purchases. As I’ve worked through the process of getting my closet in order for the new season, I’ve been thinking a lot about the building blocks of my fall wardrobe. These are the classic pieces I wear year after year, and when they wear out I purchase them in a new iteration. I’ve come up with a list of five classic pieces I love for the autumn season. These could be adapted in so many ways to suit your own personal style, and I hope this list is a helpful start to building your fall wardrobe.
In the autumn I practically live in jeans, so I look for options that are comfortable and classic. As far as cuts go, I love the London Jeans by prAna. They are a classic skinny fit with a higher rise, are made of organic cotton, and are under $100. They currently have three washes available, antique, dark, and black, and I’d love to add another pair to my closet. For reference, mine are in the antique blue wash.
To me, a cozy cabled pullover just screams autumn. I love how versatile they are in a cream color, looking great with everything from jeans to high-waisted skirts. Mine is an old one from Banana Republic two or three years ago, but in the fall fisherman jumpers are readily available. There is a gorgeous one on People Tree currently, and I love to look at vintage options on Etsy.
A Cashmere Sweater
Ah, the Everlane cashmere crew. I practically lived in this classic grey cashmere sweater last autumn, and Everlane has recently re-released their cashmere collection to include even more options. These sweaters dress up a pair of jeans or add warmth to office attire effortlessly, and I love that they are cozy but not bulky.
Whenever I think of wardrobe classics, trench-style outerwear pieces come to mind. My favorite classic fall jacket is a swing trench coat I got several years ago from Banana Republic. It has all of the traditional detailing of a trench coat, but the swingy silhouette adds a bit of playfulness. Everlane has a very similar style to this one in their outerwear collection.
Black Ankle Boots
Of course we all need some good footwear in the fall, and my black ankle boots from Madewell are still going strong. They are made of black leather with a chunky brown heel, and the combination of these two colors makes the boots very versatile. I love the touch of polish these give to my outfits. Madewell has a similar style currently, but if you’re in the mood for a bit of boot shopping, be sure to check out my last post on ethical boots for autumn!
