Ah the midi skirt. It’s one of my wardrobe staples, and yet it’s a tricky style, especially in the cooler months. I love the vintage inspired silhouette they create and the fact that they just make me feel graceful even though most of the time I’m a total klutz. The longer hemline can make a midi a bit more difficult to wear in conjunction with warmer wardrobe pieces without the look being overwhelming.
Here are my 5 tips for styling a classic midi for fall without the frump factor.
Tip #1: Accentuate your waistline.
One of the simplest ways to keep a longer skirt from looking dowdy is to add a little bit of shape. Here I’ve tucked my top into my skirt for a classic line. If you’re not into tucking in your tops, try adding a belt or sash, or even wearing a crop-top that meets the top of your skirt.
Tip #2: Sheer tights or bare legs.
Opaque tights can feel like a bit much with a midi skirt, especially in the case of the grey one I’m sporting here. To keep the overall look lighter, go with bare legs if the temperatures permit, or try sheer tights for a more subtle but still warm option.
Tip #3: Fitted but warm sweaters.
A fitted sweater is the perfect companion to a more full skirt because it provides contrast. If you want more warmth, try looking for a natural material like merino or cashmere. My blush sweater is the perfect weight for a chilly day, and I love the way the color pairs with the soft grey of the skirt.
Tip #4: Autumnal makeup
Nothing makes a look feel more fall appropriate than some classic autumnal makeup. Try wine and mauve shades to give an instant chilly weather vibe. Here I’ve gone for a classic wine lipstick and nail polish combo, along with warm-toned blush and eye shadow shades.
For accessories, bring in fall touches with texture like velvet or suede. For this look I’ve chosen to wear simple lace up ballet pumps with my classic envelope clutch. They are both done in black suede which gives the entire ensemble a more seasonal feel.
