Styling A Little Black Dress for Daytime Featuring Margu Design

Styling a little black dress for daytimeOne of my favorite things to wear, hands down, is a little black dress. They are versatile, and make me feel a little bit fancy, even during the day. Often times when I recommend the addition of an LBD to a capsule wardrobe, I get responses to the effect of  “I don’t really go out very much,” so today I want to share my tips for making the most of the wardrobe’s queen of versatility. I’m excited to be working with Margu Design on today’s blog post, and I’ll share more about Margu shortly.

Read on for more about my perfect dress and styling tips!

The Dress

When I had the opportunity to choose a dress from Margu Design, this little black number immediately stood out to me. It’s a beautiful wrap silhouette which I find very flattering on my figure, and the material is a stunning 100% silk. The designer behind Margu, Emily DeLong, describes the color of this dress as Almost Black, and I think that’s the perfect way to put it. It’s almost like a slightly faded black color which I love. The dress is fully lined in the same silk material, and it has pockets! Also check out the plaid version of the Wallflower Dress!

Margu creates clothing pieces with an incredible attention to detail, and a commitment to ethics  and sustainability. They source sustainable fabrics, notions, trims, and packaging, and each high-quality garment is built to last. Their pieces feature classic designs and playful vintage inspired details which I adore. I also love that they are a fellow Arkansas brand, and each piece is sewn with care in Fayetteville. Other favorites of mine in the current collection include the Celeste Dress and the Clover Skirt.

When it comes to wearing an LBD in the daytime, I think it’s all about the accessories. Accessories can read casual or dressy, so combining several casual pieces really helps to dress down a black dress. Here are a few of my favorites.

A casual bag

Switch out the evening bag for something like a satchel or crossbody bag. It will give an instant laid-back vibe to the look. In today’s look I went for my vintage Coach, and I love the way it pairs with the vintage inspired silhouette of my Margu dress.

Sunglasses

Obviously in the evening, you won’t need your shades, so adding them to a look gives a daytime appropriate feel without a lot of fuss. These are the Indio Sunglasses by Madewell. I love the slightly retro but still fresh feel they have.

Flats

If you’re going for a casual vibe, skip anything with a heel. You could go a lot more laid-back than I did with my pointy flats, by choosing something like sneakers or loafers for that cool girl factor. I love the little bit of contrast these neutral shoes bring to the look, and the studs keep them from reading as overly dressed up.

Bandana or scarf

This last tip is just a little trend I’ve been loving lately– adding a bandana or vintage scarf! Whenever I tie one on, I feel a tiny bit Parisian, and that’s always a good thing, am I right? I got this blush bandana from Madewell, but I highly recommend checking out your favorite vintage and thrift shops for little scarves like this.

  1. Looks great girl!! You style that whole look beautifully! Very chic!

But is Madewell ethical? I’d been avoiding them because I didn’t think they were…

    1. Thanks so much Holly! You’re so sweet!
Madewell/J.Crew is what I would categorize as fuzzy/on the line. They have taken several steps in recent years, but I’d like to see them do more. At this point, I buy accessories from them, but not clothing, and I’m not sure whether or not I’ll keep buying my accessories from them or not. You can read their ethics policy here: https://www.madewell.com/footer/socialresponsibility.jsp.
      Have a great day!

  2. I am so in love with everything about his look Lauren! I think wrap dresses are one of the most classic and flattering styles and this little black number looks absolutely stunning and chic on you! I also love that you paired it with the blush neck scarf….definitely giving some Paris vibes.
